How to Use an LED Face Mask: Step-by-Step Guide
Share
Step 1 — Cleanse Thoroughly (Non-Negotiable)
LED light needs unobstructed access to your skin to work. Sunscreen, makeup, oils, and product residue scatter light before it reaches skin cells. Before every session: cleanse twice if you wear SPF, pat completely dry, and apply nothing — no toner, serum, or moisturiser — before putting on the mask.
Step 2 — Select Your Mode
Match the mode to your primary concern for that session. Acne or breakouts: Blue or Anti-Acne mode. Fine lines and firmness: Red or Anti-Aging mode. Uneven tone and redness: Yellow or Whitening mode. General maintenance: Full spectrum or Morning/Evening mode. For masks with time-of-day programming (byTheia Masks 3, 4, 5): use the Morning mode for AM sessions and the Bedtime mode for PM sessions.
Step 3 — Secure the Mask for Maximum LED Contact
Fit determines efficacy. An LED mask that sits loosely creates distance between the LEDs and your dermis. Adjust straps until the mask sits flush at your forehead, cheeks, and jaw. For flexible silicone masks: press gently at the nose bridge and around the eye sockets to ensure full-surface contact. You should feel the mask resting against your skin, not hovering above it.
Step 4 — Run Your Full Session
Let the timer complete. 10-minute sessions are calibrated to deliver the optimal therapeutic light dose. Cutting sessions short reduces efficacy; running over rarely causes harm but is not necessary. Relax, minimise facial movement, and breathe normally. Mild warmth is normal. Nothing should feel hot or sharp.
Step 5 — Apply Skincare in the 20-Minute Window
LED therapy temporarily increases cell membrane permeability — the same cells that absorb your topical skincare. In the 20–30 minutes immediately after your session, your skin absorbs serums and moisturisers more effectively than at any other time. Apply hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, or your targeted treatment serum immediately after removing the mask to maximise results.
How to Clean Your LED Face Mask
After each session: wipe the interior surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not submerge in water. Do not use alcohol on silicone components. Do not use abrasive cloths. For the 7 Colours Mask: wipe the plastic surface gently with a damp cloth. For silicone masks (Masks 3, 4, 5): medical-grade silicone can be wiped with a mild cleanser on a soft cloth, then rinsed gently. Allow to dry before storing.
How Often Should You Use an LED Face Mask?
Minimum: 3 sessions per week. Optimal: 4–5 sessions per week. Maximum safe: daily (10 minutes). Most users find building sessions into an existing evening routine — after cleansing but before moisturising — is the easiest habit to maintain.
