What Is Near-Infrared Light?

Near-infrared (NIR) occupies the spectrum between visible red light (~700nm) and mid-infrared (~1500nm). It is invisible to the eye — but intensely active in biological tissue. Unlike visible light wavelengths that interact primarily with surface and mid-skin layers, NIR at 830–1072nm penetrates into deeper tissue: the fascia, superficial muscle, and structural protein matrix that underpins long-term skin integrity.

How Near-Infrared Light Works in Skin

NIR's primary cellular target is cytochrome c oxidase — the same enzyme targeted by red light — but at greater tissue depth.
