LED light therapy has moved from dermatology clinics to bathroom shelves in the past decade — and for good reason. What Is Photobiomodulation?

The scientific term for LED therapy is photobiomodulation (PBM), also called low-level light therapy (LLLT). PBM describes a process where specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by chromophores — light-sensitive molecules in skin cells — and trigger a cascade of biological responses without generating heat or damage.

The primary cellular target is cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria of skin cells. When this enzyme absorbs red or near-infrared light, it produces more ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the energy currency of cells. More ATP means more cellular activity: faster repair, more collagen synthesis, stronger barrier function, and reduced inflammation.

Is LED Light Therapy Safe?

Yes — when the device delivers correctly specified wavelengths at clinically validated intensities. FDA-cleared and Health Canada-licensed devices have been independently reviewed to confirm they operate within safe parameters. LED therapy at therapeutic doses does not damage DNA, does not cause UV-related photosensitivity, and does not generate the tissue-injuring heat of laser or IPL treatments.

The main safety considerations: avoid use during pregnancy without medical clearance, avoid use over active infections, and wear provided eye protection where recommended.
